Male hair loss (male pattern baldness)
Male hair loss, otherwise known as Androgenic Alopecia or Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss in men. Around 80% of men experience some sort of hair loss at some time in their life.
The hair structure
The average full head of hair has approximately 100,000 - 150,000 individual strands, with approximately 90-95% in its growing phase (anagen), 2-3% in its regressive phase (catagen), and 5-10% in its resting/shedding phase (telogen).
The anagen phase lasts approximately 1,000 days, but can range from 2-6 years. The catagen and telogen phases together last about 2-3 months, following which, the hair falls out. It is normal to lose approximately 40-80 hairs every day, but any more than this should be investigated by qualified medical hair Specialists.
Male pattern baldness
Male pattern baldness usually follows a typical pattern of receding hairline and hair thinning on the crown. For some people, this process of hair loss has been observed to start in their early twenties, but for most it happens in their late 20s and early 30s. A little thinning of the hair may be noticeable first, followed by wider hair loss allowing more of the scalp to become visible.
Most male hair loss is hereditary (male pattern), and is triggered to start after puberty by a combination of the male hormones (testosterone and dihydrotestosterone) and the subjects genetically inherited sensitivity to these hormones by the scalp hair cell.
DHT and male pattern baldness
The male hormone ‘testosterone’ is converted into the androgen ‘Dihydrotestosterone’, or ‘DHT’, by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. The excess of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) causes the hair follicles to make thinner and thinner hair until they disappear completely. .
The hairline starts to recede (bi-temporal recession), and the crown area starts to thin. Over a period of time, this continues and the hair to the top of the scalp also thins and becomes lighter. The hair around the sides and back are very little affected, but the hairs to the top of the scalp will eventually shrink, and if not treated, the hair follicle will die and not produce any further hair.
Other reasons of hair loss
- Poor diet, stress, scalp problems, prescribed medication or a medical condition
- Poor hair care
- Over processed perming, straightening, colouring or other hairdressing chemicals
- Alopecia areata or totalis, which are autoimmune disorders
- Male pattern hair loss (hereditary)
