Propecia Finasteride is an oral treatment used to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss (also known as androgenetic alopecia) on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head). Propecia is now available on private prescription in the UK.
Propecia is recommended to be used in MEN ONLY.
How Propecia works?
Propecia works only in men with pattern baldness. It does not help men who have lost hair due to chemotherapy or other medical reasons.
Male Pattern Baldness occurs due to production of male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Type II 5-alpha reductase enzyme is responsible for converting the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Propecia works by inhibiting the action of this enzyme in the body. Propecia works in the body by specifically lowering the levels of DHT in the scalp.
Who should not take Propecia?
Tell your Doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this medication, or to a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart) before taking Propecia.
Propecia should never be taken by a woman or a child. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle Propecia tablets. Propecia is not for use by women. Propecia tablets should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant.
